CANOEING COMPETITION

MARATHON

 ICF CANOE AND KAYAK - OUTRIGGER CANOES - NORTH AMERICAN MARATHON CANOES

WHAT'S NEW -

RACE COURSE REVISED, after several trials we have settled on a race course that will be both fair and challenging. We had trouble finding a course that would work in all water conditions as the river levels fluctuate greatly and the river bottom can be very rocky. Should conditions change drastically from what we have seen in our tests we may have to alter the course at the last minute so be aware that this course could change again. See details below

BEER GARDEN - we will have a beer garden and food service at the race site each afternoon until after the awards. Plan to spend the afternoons visiting with fellow competitors and watching the afternoon races. SCHEDULE FINALIZED - see new schedule, looks very similar to the first schedule with a few minor modifications. Big change is that if you can do it you can race more than one race per day. This change was made because of the number of people using the age averaging rule to form crews. By putting the One man and M/F events in the AM and the Mixed events in the late afternoon with the OC-6 early afternoon if you can paddle twice in the day you do not have to give up a small boat race to race a mixed or OC-6 crew

North Saskatchewan River
The North Saskatchewan River is a fairly large river snaking through Edmonton. It has a width of about 200m and a current of 4kms/hr. There are no rapids or hazards (Bridge abutments), however depending on flow rates, there can be shallows and sand bars. Scouting is recommended, as the best route is not obvious. Racers will complete on various courses from 60 to 100 minutes in duration. Paddlers will not be required to portage at any point on the course.
Race Course- see map below;

 START "A" is 15 kms upstream of the Devon Bridge - We intend to have a race course that takes 2hrs to complete, depending on water flows and depths this may mean one or two loops will be run at the bottom of the course.

START "B" is at the Devon Bridge, 4km upstream from the finish line - This shorter course is intended to be a run of about 1hr 15 min. Again depending on river flows and depths we will use loops to make up the course to get the desired lenght.

START "C" is 1.5 kms upstream of the finish line - This course is used only be the OC-6's and again we will make the course around the 1hr 15 min durathion.

Turning bouys 1,2,3 and 4 are near the Devon campsite

Course for MC-1, and MC-2 events:Start "A" - down to Bouy 2, up to Bouy 3, down to finish

Course for C-2, and K-2 events:Start "A" - down to finish (no loop at bouys)
