LENGTH OF THE LAKE 2002 - sept 21

What a weekend, warm weather and a following wind for the entire 100kms

How could it get any better?? How about fantastic racing.

First thanks to everyone for pulling together to make this happen, fielding 3 teams was a bit ambitious but the pay off is that everyone got to paddle. WE ended up with 4 outsideers and 3 last minute recruits but alls well that ends well. Again thanks for understanding that crews were in flux right up to Friday night at 9:00pm, when you try to make it work for everyone some people have to go along with the changes so again thanks for the understanding.

Check out the pictures , http://www.cadvision.com/hemsters , thanks to bill , great job again.

THE RACE - TEAM # 1 FIRST PLACE time of 8:07- Legs 1-3-5 Greg and Sandy, Claire, Perks, Dave P and Julie G with Legs 2-4 Jacques, Fiona, Geoff, Faye(Price George), Lynda and Martin. This was a super effort with the lead changing 4 times during the race. After leg #1 Vernon was up by less than a minute, after the change Calgary pulled ahead passing off a 2 minute lead, the end of leg 3 saw boats virtually even with Vernon slightly ahead. The next change the lead was again close to 2 minutes and as leg 5 is a short one Calgary was able to hold off the closing Vernon team for the win. As Calgary's first big win of a CORA event this marks a coming of age for the Calgary club. The other club will know we are a force and will be looking for us from now on. Well done team.

TEAM # 2 - FIFTH PLACE time of 8:44 Legs 1-3-5 Jon A, Mike Lastuka, Kelly, Edie, Chris, Shannon(Spokane) with Legs 2-4 John R, Robert, Mike Major, Amy, Brenda, Ronda . The depth of our club was shown when this team finished the first leg in 3rd place, but after the second leg had slipped to 5th. We then battled back and forth with the Gibsons' "A" boat Finally ending up 5th only 6 sec behind Gibsons. A strong showing for a crew that had 5 rookies on it. This is about where our "A" crew finished the year before and look where they are this year. Can a finish with TWO Calgary crews on the podium be possible?? In these kind of races things happen and I want to make special mention of Mike Lastuka's contribution. After paddling leg 3 for his crew he had about a 5 minute break and jumped in and paddled leg 4 for the 3rd team (they lost a paddler after leg 2), thats team spirit.

TEAM #3 - SEVENTH PLACE time of 9:08 Team 3, Seven Novice run the Length, including a women we pick up in the lobby of the Sandman Inn in Vernon. We were not really racing just trying to find a rhythm and pace. Lots of nervous laughter as the wind and waves carried our "sorry asses" down the lake. Ross ran a laundry service, drying our clothes by tying them to the trailer between legs, and I believe we ate more cookies than teams one and two. Also thanks to Vernon, they lent us a Clipper with a splashy yellow cover, very nice.  Team 2 super generous
giving us Mike, when we lost a paddler. We would have been in sooner but Karen found a nude beach, still the time, 9:08, shows that the novice were strong and we really did have a great time,
so if your thinking about it, be confident and enter the Length next year.
