sprint racing

Equipment

Racing canoes and kayaks come in different lengths to accommodate different numbers of paddlers. The boats are more streamlined than recreational canoes and kayaks. C1, C2, and C4 are racing canoes with 1, 2, or 4 paddlers respectively. Paddlers in canoe events kneel on 1 knee and use a single blade paddle. K1, K2, and K4 are kayak class boats with 1, 2, or 4 paddlers. Kayakers are seated and use a double- bladed paddle.

The athletes compete in the "sprint" distances of 200 metre, 500 metre, and 1000 metre courses at National and World Championships as well as the Western Canada, Canada and Olympic Summer Games. The athletes can also compete in the 6000m "long distance" races at the National Championships, Western Canada, and Canada Summer Games.

Another event, which is exclusive to Canada, is war canoe (C-15). This 15-person boat is a 30-foot open racing canoe with 14 paddlers. It is steered by a standing coxswain and is only raced at regattas within Canada.

Our club provides boats for its athletes to train and compete in. Some paddlers purchase their own boats when they reach a stage where they are competitive at the national level. Costs for boats can range from $500 to $6000 depending on type, material, and place of manufacture.

The club also has paddles for beginning paddlers. Once athletes are training full time it is advisable that they purchase, through the club, their own paddle. Average cost is approx. $350. Second-hand boats and paddles are always available for purchase, sometimes it just takes a little research to find them!
