- Saturday at the Calgary Canoe Club is a busy time with many members and the public using the club and the grounds. Participants are asked to be aware of other users and minimize congestion around the Canoe and Rowing boat bay.
- When arriving on-site the day of the event, athletes must check in at the whipper-in station.
- Team trailers must remain in the paved parking areas (not on grass please)
- Subway lunch will be provided as an option during the online registration process.
- All competitors must wear a PFD:
- CKC sprint competition rules and the CKC Code of Safety govern PFD regulations.
- Inflatable PFDs are NOT acceptable for U16 or younger age-class competitors.
- Site-specific PFD regulations for the Glenmore Reservoir require paddlers to wear a PFD (inflatable PFDs are acceptable for those above the U16 competitive age class).
- The 500 and 200m events will feature head to head racing and will be directly in front of the Calgary Canoe Club. Course completion will be in front of the judging tower. Viewing is available from many high vantage points around the canoe club. Please leave the area around the docks clear for paddlers, competitors, and other users.
- A graphic of the 2000m time trial course is included in this document. The course location was selected to minimize the likelihood of wind interference. The halfway turn point will be marked by a single marker visible with an elevated flag. The finish area is 500m south of the tower, like the start, but close to shore in a channel with two finish markers designating the end of the course.
- Viewing of the 2000m course is possible from the bike path next to the Earl Grey Golf Course (see image). Spectators can walk or bike to the viewing area from the Canoe Club parking lot.
- Be familiarity with course format and event details
- Team uniforms are NOT required
- The start order will be by discipline: 1st—men’s Kayak, 2nd—men’s Canoe, 3rd—women’s Kayak, and 4th—women’s Canoe. Within a discipline, older ages will start before younger ages.
- In the case of a false start, one ‘failed attempt’ to complete the course will be recorded.
- Failed attempt: If a competitor attempts but cannot complete the course while making a legitimate good-faith effort, a second attempt can be made in the next available start position (last in line). A second attempt is permitted only if the competitor can return to the starting zone before the final athlete is started.
- Heats and finals will have a maximum of 9 entries.
- Results from each previous event will be used to seed lanes for the next.
- When an entry in a heat is scratched the lane will remain empty unless redrawn to fewer heats.
- Where an athlete is scratched in a final, the following ranked athletes may be advanced to fill the space.
- Where no heats are required, seeding in finals will place the top-ranked in the middle of the course: rank 1 - lane 5, rank 2 - lane 4, rank 3 - lane 6, rank 4 – lane 3 and so on until 9 lanes are filled.
- When there are 10-18 entries (2 heats), the top 3 ranked in each and the following 3 with the next best overall times will advance to Final A. The Remaining crews will advance to Final B and C by performance time.
- When there are 19-28 entries (3 heats), the Finals will consist of the winner in each heat going to Final A, with all others by the following best times.
- When there are more than 28 entries (4 or more heats), finals will be based solely on performance time.
- No result may be considered above those in a higher-level final, regardless of performance time.
- If a disqualification occurs but a result is required to be seeded in the next event, the disqualified crew will be advanced as the last-ranked entry.
- Paddlers enter as teams of 4 and can be a mix of men and women, canoe and kayak.
- Teams will provide a team name and are encouraged to be in uniforms matching the team name.
- Teams will all start together in front of the docks and complete one loop of the 500m race course (1000m) in singles. The last crew in each team crossing the finish line will be counted for the team's finish time.
- 15 minutes following the singles start, the teams will again start but this time in doubles. The final doubles crew in each team will again count for the team's time.
- 15 minutes after the start of the doubles, the teams will again start but in 4’s.
- The team with the lowest cumulative time will be declared the winner.
- Teams should set up crew boats in advance or have a ‘land crew’ ensuring the needed boat is ready for the next start.
- If not enough C2 or C4 are available, tin recreational canoes can be used.
